The family isn’t functioning as a unit.
In your family, no one talks or spends time together. And when you do talk, there’s a little or lots of arguing.
No one is listening, and no one understands each other.
Each member is so busy and focused on their little world.
You’re disappointed and frustrated because this is not what you imagined family to be like.
Coaching can help bring these worlds together.
Imagine sitting in a room with a person who is a coach and can provide support for your family. With curiosity and genuine interest, I listen to each person to instill the belief that everyone has a voice that is worth hearing.
Also, no ONE person is the problem. The person’s problematic behavior, appearing as the problem, often manifests as a symptom of a deeper-seated issue within the family. For example, the kid is always on their phone and doesn’t talk to anyone. The problem appears to be the kid is addicted to their phone.
However, the problem means that the family is disconnected. That problem is the family’s enemy (opposing team). Progress is possible if you all can team up against the enemy.
Imagine a team that works together to repeatedly score points to win the game. That’s your family. Each point scored provides a time for celebration. I encourage acknowledgment of progress just as you would when someone on your team makes a point.
In therapy, I facilitate effective communication and use of tools to win the game. However, I give homework so the practice continues. Sessions are typically about an hour a week, but you spend days together outside of the session, where you put in the actual work; i.e., the repetitions.
Imagine a new family.
Now the team has overcome the opponent.
The team feels united and has a sense of pride. Each person has a sense of belonging.
We have achieved a degree of satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. Each person has a sense of belonging, a feeling of positive contribution, and even a better understanding of the importance of unity.
Overall, everyone feels a greater sense of togetherness. The unit will hold up the trophy at the end of the day.
